A Fountain of Spice in Sofia, Bulgaria
For the true lovers of hot peppers, pickled peppers, hot pepper sauces and specialty spicy foods, this is the place to be in Sofia! And we all know that here at “Spices of Life” we love anything and everything spicy!
The Face of “The House of Spicy”
Meet Slavena Rodinova. She is an enthusiastic force for the promotion of The House of Spicy and the Hot Farm family business. I was very warmly welcomed into The House of Spicy shop, (@ “Knyaz Boris I” 94, Sofia), where Slavena was more than happy to describe each product in lovely detail and make suggestions about what spicy things I should try. Slavena was also very quick and caring to warn her customers about their hotter products and, of course, the Super Hots. I have left the Super Hots for my next visit when I will try to convince Slavena to film me eating the Bulgarian Spirit pepper newly created by her father Hristo Rodinov (1,000,000+ on the Scoville). But this will be another post and hopefully a video for the future. Did I mention that Slavena is also an upcoming singer who performs professionally in several locations around Sofia? #SpicySongBird
Here are the hot sauces I tried:
- Bulgarian Carrot Pepper Sauce; 100% Bulgarian Carrot Pepper, white vinegar and salt
- Chocolate Habanero Pepper Sauce; 100% Chocolate Habanero Pepper, white vinegar and salt
- Red Habanero Pepper Sauce; 100% Red Habanero Pepper, white vinegar and salt
- Orange Habanero Pepper Sauce; 100% Orange Habanero Pepper, white vinegar and salt
- Gold Devil Hot Sauce; 100% Trinidad Moruga Yellow Pepper, Naga Yellow Pepper, 7 Pot Yellow Pepper, white vinegar and salt
From the very start, just let me say to Hristo, the creator of all the Hot Farm products, RESPECT! The majority of his wonderful sauces are made from only hot peppers, white vinegar and salt. What does this mean you say? First, that all of the Hot Farm products are 100% natural. Second, that only the true pepper flavours come through in his sauces. And third, that you can taste the quality of the peppers themselves, how they are grown and cared for, yes they do grow all of their own peppers, from the very first taste whether it is a hot sauce, spicy jam, hot pepper puree or any other product in the shop.
I loved them all, but my favourite hot sauces from the list above are; the Bulgarian Carrot Pepper, the Chocolate Habanero Pepper and I especially loved the Gold Devil, could it be because of the sexy label? Na, just love the sauce! I can’t wait to go back and try everything!

Specialty Spicy Items
Here are the specialty items I tried:
- Hot Sweet Candied White Habaneros
- Bulgarian Blue Plum Jam with Carolina Reaper
- Bulgarian Rose Peddle Jam with Carolina Reaper
- Strawberry Jam with Carolina Reaper
- Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Puree
Let’s start with unique; the Hot Sweet Candied White Habaneros. This was a very unexpected surprise! The tastiness of the White Habanero candied whole like sStrawberry Jam with Carolina Reaperall little bombs of sweet and spicy goodness! #WOW
This leads us next to the specialty jams they produce. I have been a big fan of rose peddle jam for many years and have used it in many recipes ranging from ice creams all the way to meat dishes, but the subtle addition of the Carolina Reaper was most definitely an unexpected taste sensation that just takes the already lovely Bulgarian Rose Peddle jam to a whole different level of tastiness! Ditto for the Bulgarian Blue Plum jam and the Strawberry Jam that rests only on the natural sweetnesses of the fruit and that wonderful kick from our beloved Carolina Reaper.
The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion puree… we all know this pepper, or at least some of us do. I know it intimately, having eaten one raw, the biggest and scariest one from the basket, in a street food hot pepper challenge a few years back. #TotalMindBlowingExperience. Right, back to the puree. You can imagine that as I was bringing this lovely sample of Trinidad Moruga Scorpion puree to my mouth I was reliving my mind-blowing memories from the past. But to my very pleasant surprise, the shock factor of the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion has been beautifully mellowed by Hristo Rodinov through his classic approach; the perfect blend of peppers, vinegar and salt. #PepperMaster
I am planning a different post about the Hot Farm itself and the dedicated family behind this fabulous adventure into the world of everything Hot and Spicy.
